I was surprised lately to find MTV in my newsfeed and at the same time, it was nice to remember this TV channel that I’ve loved to watch as a teenager and young adult. It was in the 90’s in Romania and the early 2000’s in Germany that I used to watch music videos and a couple of shows like MTV Cribs and MTV Made.
Mostly at the weekend, when my parents were shopping or gone somewhere, I could watch TV in the living room and I chose MTV quite often. It was so exciting to check out new music videos or the top 20! Looking back, it is so fascinating to remember those times.
my parents used to be quite found of listening to music even before MTV was there. My mom liked ABBA and I guess my dad too. We had a mix of Romanian folk music, some rock bands, ABBA, and the usual suspects like Modern Talking, Pet Shop Boys … “West End Girls” is one of the songs I heard and liked back then.
but we didn’t see these bands on television because the censorship was in place – being the 80s in the “East Block” so to speak
that’s why music TV channels in the 90s were so popular because the censorship was over just as the country changed its regime and me as well as my parents were fascinated by the new view of the world 🌍!
Watching those commercials for some European tour made me wish I could go to such a concert and in the end, was one of the reasons I moved to Germany. I have to say, I saw Jon Bon Jovi in Cologne and it was great!
I didn’t go to other concerts for a while. I saw a popular Romanian band in Cologne too but sadly, I didn’t go regularly until later on, when I found my favorite musicians…
As for the MTV news that the channel will be closed in some countries, it’s not that bad for me, we can still watch it as a streaming on smart TVs (Zatto for example) or even as live streaming over the Internet. It’s time to reconnect and check out what is going on! MTV weekend, here I come 🤗
